Members Needed for Melody Makers (Wave 17)

Project Overview

Hey guys! James Dahlbender here, and welcome to the casting call for my music and audio team, Melody Makers Music and Sound Design.

FAQ

#1. What are you looking for your team?

We're looking for some session musicians who would play some instruments, some music composers, some sound designers/editors, a MIDI orchestrator, vocalists, and lyricists.

#2. What do you mean by playing an instrument live?

You play a physical musical instrument and record it.

#3. Do I need to know how to read music?

No, but I would send in the sheet music anyway. The scratch track, direction, and mockup would be used.

#4. Do you make the MIDIs?

No, sorry. I would rely on another person for that.

#5. What programs do you use to make music and sound design?

I use Musescore for sheet music and right now, my DAW for music and sound design is REAPER. I'm planning to upgrade to Digital Performer and Pro Tools soon. I also use Reason which is a DAW from Propellerhead used by Cobra Starship and Owl City.

#6. Where can I contact you?

I'm on Discord.

#7. Is it a paid or unpaid offer.

This is a volunteer project, so it's unpaid.

Music Composers

Here's where you apply to be a music composer. As we know, a music composer makes the music for a show, movie, video game, etc. You can use any DAW you're comfortable with.

NOTE: I may cast more than one music composer. Y'know, the more the merrier! Also, I'm handling most of the music.

P.S: You can also use factory sounds that come with your DAW and/or samplers.

Like MX4, and etc. for Digital Performer users, EXS24 for Logic Pro Users, Kontakt Factory Library for Kontakt Users, TTS-1 for Cakewalk users, Reason Factory and Orkester Banks for Reason users, Halion for Cubase/Nuendo users, and so on.

P.P.S: Sound Effects Editors can audition for the music composer role too. I believe anyone can make music, as the easiest way is using mostly loops you have in your arsenal. If you have no loops, you can find some on Loopmasters, Big Fish Audio, you name it. You can also use loops that comes with your DAW if it does.

To audition, send in a demonstration of your skills by taking "Saa Hajimari You," an original soundtrack and reccuring theme for Azumanga Daioh, and arranging it in various styles/genres/aesthetics. You can also do the same with another Azumanga Daioh recurring theme, "Shin Gakki."

Here's where you apply to be a sound designer/editor. A sound editor edits the sfx together for the episode. A sound designer creates the sfx for a project.

PS: You can audition for the music composer role too. See the music composer role for more information.

To audition, you can create a soundscape based on any of the strips in the Azumanga Daioh manga. Keep in mind, it's in Japanese, so English versions are provided as well.

Here's where you audition to be a voice director. Whenever we do dubs of foreign shows, voices for cartoons and etc., voice spots for various projects, etc., a voice director brings in some guest vocalists or one of our members (who can do a good voice), and give some direction to the voices. They would even double as a casting director. Even I would do some voice direction too.

MIDI Orchestrator (EMERGENCY ROLE)

Unfortunately, since my last person doesn't make MIDIs for me anymore due to work and other priorities, I'm looking for someone to create the MIDI files for my music, so here's where you try out for that. A MIDI Orchestrator creates the MIDI files for a composer, and does MIDI Programming. It's kinda similar to how Tom Nazziola contributed for Bill Weisbach. He made some MIDI files for Bill Weisbach for when he worked on Baby Einstein, Dateline, or whatever. You can use any DAW you're comfortable using since it can be applied to any DAW. Here's how it goes. First, I would send in the sheet music. Secondly, you would transcribe the piece by reading the sheets and making it more realistic sounding with more accurate articulations and dynamics, then forward me the MIDI information, and I would work from there. Since this is one of the main roles for my music, you can also double as a session musician for any instrument you have, and as a vocalist (I would direct you if a part would be an audio recording, and you could do so in your DAW, and send in the recording. I would import the recording during the mixing.)

Here's where you audition to be an ADR/Video Game Script Writer. Whenever we do an anime dub or ADR for a foreign show or something without dialogue, the ADR writer adapts the show/movie in English or other languages. They also write some narrations and some vocalizations too. On the other hand, Video game writers write the voice lines for a game since we typically do the audio for games after the game visuals are complete. Just like how anime voice acting is typically done after the animation.

Here's where you audition to be an audio director. In a video game, the audio director is the head of the audio team of a game. See the music composer and sound designer roles in order to audition.
