Port Town of Horizon - An Experimental Ambient Story

Port Town of Horizon - An Experimental Ambient Story

Project Overview

Port Town of Horizon is an experimental video series that aims to blend ambient soundscapes with subtle narratives. Set in the fantasy world of Artoria, each video aims to capture the atmosphere of everyday life in the Port Town of Horizon. A tiered city atop a hill that overlooks the sparkling waters of the Levin Sea, Horizon is a booming hub for trade, art, and adventure. As we find ourselves transported to the cozy corners of the city, we come across its vibrant inhabitants. From soldiers to witches to monster hunters and savvy young shopkeepers, each individual has a story to tell and a role to play.

The idea for this project was inspired by the numerous ambient soundscapes on YouTube that provide many of us with the soundtrack to our studies, work, or creative pursuits. Using a modified version of the Pomodoro productivity timer, this project seeks to create ambient soundscapes that provide background noise to assist with focus. At regular intervals, listeners will be encouraged to take a break. During the break phase of each soundscape, short conversations between characters will take place, giving life to the world within the video. While audible, these conversations will be fairly subtle. Listeners can choose to eavesdrop or simply continue working or studying as life in the city bustles around them.

The characters and setting of Port Town of Horizon are original creations and will continue to be developed as the narratives progress.

The first video in the series will be set in Hildegard's Cafe. An art nouveau coffee house nestled above the Horizon Harbor. Lead Barista Lily welcomes an eclectic mix of locals on a bright Wednesday morning.

When submitting your auditions, please also provide your Discord handle. For your audition reads, I would greatly appreciate if you try 2-3 reads for each line. Feel free to experiment with the cadence and emotive direction of the lines.

I currently have a miniscule budget so I can only pay a token sum for the moment. However, I have plans in place to secure further funding for this project and will pass on payment for additional work/lines done in the future.

  • Roles Assigned - A Huge Thank You to Everyone

    Good day everyone,

For the past week, it has been my great pleasure listening to your amazing voices as you brought my characters to life. Each and every one of you did so well in your auditions. It was incredibly tough to narrow down the list and even more difficult to finalise each role. It was akin to being presented with all manner of precious gemstones and having to pick just one.

A giant thank you to everyone who submitted an audition. If you haven't been cast this time around, I hope you will consider trying again when our next episode is in production.

I have reached out to some of you regarding future characters that are in development.

To the wonderful actors who have been cast, I will reach out within the next two days to give you more information about the roles.

Once again, thank you all very much. Have a great weekend!

  • Reviewing Auditions

    Good day, everyone!

I'd like to thank everyone who has already submitted an audition. I never expected forty-one in a single day!

I can tell it's going to be an extremely challenging task to narrow down this amazing talent pool. You are all such wonderful voice actors and it has been an absolute treat listening your reads. Before I start assigning roles, however, I would like to keep auditions open for at least a week. I am beginning to shortlist for each role but it will be a little while longer before I'm ready to make the final call.

I'd also like to mention that Port Town of Horizon is going to be an ongoing project. If you are not shortlisted for a role this time around, I hope you will consider applying for another one of our episodes in the future. Horizon has a huge roster of characters to offer and I believe many of you might just be the perfect voice for them.

Thank you for your time and I hope your day goes well.

Floretta is an apprentice witch living in Horizon. She operates the potion cart in the market street. As guarded as she is, a polite word never fails to break down her walls. She speaks like a "proper witch" would with all the poise and pomp taught to her at the academy. It is a tiring facade to uphold, and Floretta longs for any opportunity to drop the guise and have a lighthearted chat.

A disciple of the Golden Wheel, albeit not a very good one. Seirin is mischievous and opportunistic, always on the lookout for a free meal or a chance to collect "alms". Those wise (or foolish) enough to humour her unconventional behaviours receive surprising wisdom from this spry acolyte.

  • (disappointed) "Huh...that much? Fair enough..." (pause) "But surely...just one more? I'm sure The Wheel is good for it."

  • (chuffed) "Oh, Lily, you are an avatar of the Mercy Goddess herself. Take heed! You never know the value of a good deed until it is returned to you in kind."
