The Rubyix Saga - The Rise of Nevadora - Arc 1 - remaining roles

Project Overview

After a very successful first casting call, we were able to cast 14/18 roles for the first arc of this fantasy audiobook project! We have since made a trailer to show for it. With this casting call we're looking for the final few roles.

General description

"The Rubyix Saga" is an illustrated novel project I work on next to my studies- with "The Rise of Nevadora" being the first out of a planned series of seven books. It's been a long time dream to turn this story into an audiobook with actual distinct voices for each of the characters.

The story is a fantasy work taking place in the "Realm of Magic", a setting drawing inspiration from celtic, steampunk, goth, pagan and other traditions.

Book synopsis

It's been over a cycle since I was almost caught by the Hunters, since I was torn apart from my family and was thrown halfway across the dimension, to the Realm of Magic. They say Magic comes from who you are as a person, from your inner strength and determination to follow the path you're on- and if that's so, maybe I've lost it. Ever since that day I've been unable to spark even the tiniest bit of magical energy- or well, up until recently, that is. It all started after a slight deviation in this dream I've been having and an incident in the Nevadoran Forest- and now I suddenly got invited to study at a school for Magic, Arthyrell Academy. Will this finally lead me to the answers I've been seeking?

It's a fantasy/mystery novel series taking place in the wondrous realm of Magic. We meet Ehrynn, a young fairy who barely escaped the clutches of a group called "The Hunters" a year ago and is now in search of her family and the mysterious fairy who saved her that day. The story is instigated when she gets an invitation to Arthyrell Academy and threads into this unknown world. But unknown seems not to be the best word to describe it, as, while exploring the Academy, everything seems oddly familiar and the professors seem to know more about her and her origins than she knows herself.

REQUIREMENTS & PERKS

Age requirements

The main characters in the novel are aged 15 and slightly above at the start of the series.

However, the themes, plot and setting require me to put 13+ as the advisory age and voice acting requires you to engage more deeply with a character than simple reading does. Therefore, I won't be accepting any submissions from VA's under 16 and will require you to add your age in the submission notes.

*Note: additionally, your level of English should be quite high, as my writings tend to obtain more obscure words.

Time required

Due to the nature of the project, I have a variety of roles ranging from a couple lines every once in a while to characters that appear (nearly) every chapter and might even have solo scenes or chapters from their point of view. The project will consist of seven books total (with 52 chapters each!) and possible expansions of the saga and I aim to keep the cast (mostly) consistent throughout the entirety of the series, so please consider carefully before applying.

To find out what would be a good fit for you, check the tag behind their names:

Heavy roles

➳ main character: By far the biggest roles available. Appearing nearly every chapter, these characters have strong roles in the story and rich backstories. A role like this will require you to do solos and turn in lines frequently. I might also call on you for lines for promotional material for the book series.

➳ secondary character: These characters are technically not a part of the main cast, but make up very important and crucial roles in the plot nonetheless. A role like this will require you to get in lines frequently, but might also have you on the back burner for a couple chapters when the focus lies on the main cast.

➳ headmaster: There are four headmasters in the story that play out a unique role in the series. These roles are similar to secondary characters, but will also require you to do speeches and, as they are ancient, serve as main character roles in the history of the realm, a history that has its own shorter novel I am currently outlining.

Lightweight roles

➳ supporting character: These characters appear frequently enough to be deemed of importance, but aren't very line-heavy and more on the casual side. Nonetheless, they could still require a bit more effort during certain parts of the story.

➳ background character: These characters appear infrequently or could even be one-timers in the story. If you would like to contribute to the project but can't commit on the long term, this might be the perfect fit for you.

Quality requirements

As this is very much a passion project, I won't be putting too many requirements on the audio quality. As long as it sounds good and blends in well with the other recordings, you're set.

I do, however, expect you to actually record them with some kind of decent microphone, though. No recording on your phone, please.

Means of contact

I have set up a Discord server I'll be asking you to join to stay updated on the progress of the story / other developments, regardless of your role. This server is for the project in its entirety, meaning it won't be limited to just the VA's. It's currently a small group of the first couple VA's, my beta reader and some close friends in the server, but I would love for it to grow out to a tight-knit little community.

Additionally, I would require your e-mailadress to send over lines and receive recordings. This will remain private from other members of the project, unless you give permission for me to share it / share it yourself.

Secrecy requirement

Due to its long form nature in story-telling and chapter-by-chapter revalations of the mystery, you cannot share any of the information you receive on upcoming chapters, character backstories, designs, concept art and other currently-in-development works until they are officially released.

Additional requirements

As I stated earlier, this is a passion project. I would, therefore, highly prefer it if my VA's had a genuine interest in the story, as this is very much a long term engagement. If you haven't done so already, take a look at the site (linked below) to see if this project aligns with your interests. With any role it would be required to at least read the chapters your character appears in, but if you take on any of the "heavy" roles, I will very much require you to read the story in its entirety.

Payment

As I am currently working on this project on the side while in college, with an internship and a Saturday morning job, I am in no position to be offering any kind of payment. I hope that, in the future, I'll be in a position to give at least a small compensation, but I cannot and will not make any such promises. If your livelihood depends on that, consider looking for another project.

Added perks

That said- In return for the role you're taking on, you will receive a number of perks.

➳ Early access to upcoming (unillustrated) chapters that have already passed by my beta reader.

➳ Early and exclusive information on the role you are portraying, such as important backstory beats and their development in chapters yet unwritten.

➳ Access to the Discord server, and in turn the ability to share your talents with other members and build connections.

Questions

✧ How does role assignment work?

When the first deadline comes (currently: September 13th), I'll be assigning roles to those I think would be a perfect fit right away and decline the auditions that don't suit the characters in question. This means you might end up in a middle ground, where I do consider you for the role but can't give the role away for certain yet- Perhaps you've auditioned for two characters and I'm waiting for one of the two to get another suiting audition in before I decide which one you'll get, or I'm simply uncertain you'll be the best fit here. I ask for your patience and understanding in this process.

After this, it's rinse repeat with a new deadline, until the cast is complete (we might start doing prep work sooner than we complete the cast though, depending on how soon we can fill in the final role needed to start with chapter 1).

✧ I am not [insert age/gender/accent], can I still apply for the role?

Yes! By all means. As long as you are above 16, you can apply for any character you'd like. If your voice suits my vision for the character, the role is yours.

✧ What happens if I apply, but don't get the role?

In the case that you don't get the role you applied for, I will notify you. In case I really liked your audition I will ask you if you'd like to be on standby for future roles. And should I think your voice might be suited for a different character, I will give you the option to audition for that role (not guaranteed you will get it). If the audition for that role hasn't opened yet (because their first appearance is in a later arc), I will ask for your contact information and you'll be the first to be notified as soon as that role opens.

✧ Can I still join the Discord if I don't get a role?

If you are standby, whether for a role that has not been opened yet or to audition again in later arcs, you will still get an invite if you'd like one. In other cases: No. It is currently exclusively for members of the project.

✧ Can I audition for / receive multiple roles?

You can certainly audition for multiple roles! In fact, audition for as many as you'd like!

If you have already received the role of a heavy character, you cannot receive another one. You can, however, still audition for and receive lightweight ones as long as you do not end up sounding too similar to the character most central to the plot.

If all of the information is a little overwhelming to you and you'd like to have a listen to the description / the descriptions of the characters, I've got a YouTube video containing the information for the Call on my channel!

https://youtu.be/MwP5bUTxdJs

By sending in an audition you are agreeing to the terms and conditions as listed above, as well as confirming that you are, in fact, 16+.

Anthea Frostthorn ✩ secondary character - fairy/student/cousin to MC
closed
Deferred: Profit Share
Role assigned to: Zeova

Personality

Anthea could best be described as having the personality of a magical hippie. She's laid back, cares a lot about the world around her- even more so about her family- and she will strum up a lovely melody on her guitar any time she can. Though, her care also leaves her troubled at times, and she has a tendency of disappearing for days at a time...

Voice

I'm looking for a voice with a familial warmth, a little laid back and with bonus points if your voice can skip whenever you have to do a panicked line. A femine voice- motherly, if you will. Anthea can be a bit of a tease, too, so if you know how to make teasing sound warm and full of love, this might just be the role for you!

  • 'Oh Ehrynn... that your powers haven't sprouted yet doesn't mean they never will. Flowers that bloom late often are the most beautiful.'

  • ‘Yes, I believe so. That was incredibly brave.' *switch to preachy* 'But also incredibly stupid. You could have gotten hurt... or worse!'

  • *teasing* ‘School regulations say you can wear any accessory as long as it’s properly coloured, now you’ll have no excuse not to wear it anymore. I won’t change it back, you know, you’ll have to learn to do that for yourself. It’s basic Magic. You’ll be fine.’

Ann Lee Followers ✩ secondary character - fairy/professor of Foreign Languages
closed
Deferred: Profit Share
cast offsite

Personality

Ann Lee is about as upbeat as you could get. Favoured dearly by her students, she brings life to the Academy in her own unique way and encourages them to discover themselves. She is the youngest of all of the professors, but nonetheless a hard working asset of the team, always carrying around more books and scrolls than, perhaps, she should carry.

Voice

I'm looking for an energetic and charming voice. This character gives out great advice while passing it off like she just got her two cents to give. If you're the type of person that can make your voice sound like an endearing smile, you could be a good fit for this role!

Note: As she teaches Foreign Languages, it is needless to say that you'd have to make a variety of gibberish work, so if you could send in some convincing sounding gibberish with your audition, that would help!

  • *with glee* ‘You two seem to be enjoying yourselves.’

  • ‘No buts. It would be a good thing for you girls to move on. What happened last class happened last class, this cycle will be different. Besides, you might find some fairy who’s going through the Initiation to be quite interesting.’

  • ‘The way I see it, you’ve got two options.- Either you ask her directly and run the risk of disappointment once, or you can spend your entire course at the Academy playing that conversation over and over and over again in your head every time you come across Faewood, never quite knowing the outcome but forever running around with those “what if’s” you’ve got going through your mind.’

Ezra Muñoz ✩ main character - fairy/student

Deferred: Profit Share
Role assigned to: Riley Starr McLean

Personality

Ezra is the fiery leader of the group. She's a fierce and determined warrior fairy capable of pulling the best out of the "younglings" in her guard, hotheaded and stubborn as she is, but below the surface there's also a compassionate friend who holds herself to the highest standards of all.

Voice

I'm looking for a (com)passionate voice, not too high and not too low, but comfortably in the middle. If you're someone who can sound fierce in a debate, direct in your orders, can let some sarcasm shine through and has a tenderness to your advice, you might be a fit for this role!

Language:
  • english
Voice description:

  • ‘Tssk, ouch. What exactly are you doing?’

  • ‘Yeah- I mean, it was quite the hassle- but in the end, we pulled through.’

  • ‘Thing is- I didn’t know a damned thing about Magic, but Faewood took me in anyway. It took a little more work than for most, considering I had to learn everything from scratch- but she never once gave up on me- and as you can see, I’ve passed the first cycle.’

Abena Abrish ✩ main character - fairy/student
closed
Deferred: Profit Share
Role assigned to: ThatNerdyRogue

Personality

Abena is calmth personified. She is levelheaded, steadfast and mystical. Her wisdom far exceeds her age and her rigorous training has left her skilled and prepared for the world around the Academy, and my, is she willing to put her best effort into getting as far as she possibly can in this realm. She is the only one of the main characters to be royalty from childhood on, and this sometimes leads to little misunderstandings... but she won't be defined by her lineage, she plans to make a name of her own.

Voice

I'm looking for a deeper feminine sounding voice. Considering she was raised by royalty, a bit of a posh accent would be preferred for this character. She also uses a lot of suger words, so be sure you're prepared for that if you care to audition for her. If you can emulate calmth and mystique with your voice, this might be your character!

Language:
  • english
Voice description:
  • british (posh)

  • aristocratic british
  • ‘It’s okay, sweetie, you’ve got nothing to apologize for.’

  • ‘I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. And you should, too, Ra, you don’t know what’s going on in her life.’

  • ‘- when fairies were hunted down and brutally murdered for their wings. - It was back in the age when fairies still weren’t scattered over the realm of Magic and actually lived here, together, on the very planet that this Academy is built upon, as part of the fair folk that inhabit it.’
